Tell Us Your Beautiful Disaster Story:
I’m 42 and grew up in a very toxic household. My mother is an alcoholic who let very bad sexual things happen to me. My father is a biker who severely abused me—mentally and physically—to the point that I ended up in the hospital multiple times as a child.
At age 19, I gave birth to my wonderful son. At age 25, I had my daughter. She was diagnosed with autism at 16 months, and it’s pretty severe. She’s now 17, nonverbal, and cannot care for herself at all. But she’s such a happy little girl, and I love her so much. I wouldn’t change a thing.
After my daughter was diagnosed, I was diagnosed with endometriosis and polycystic ovarian syndrome, which led to a hysterectomy. Right after that, I was diagnosed with something called Cushing’s disease and have had two brain tumors removed.
Then I was diagnosed with bladder cancer. I’ve been cancer-free for three years, but just last week, I was told the cancer cells in my bladder have come back. And my third brain tumor has also returned.
I’m a strong woman, and I know I can beat these health issues again. I continue to care for my son and beautiful autistic daughter and always will—with my loving husband of 27 years (married for 23) by my side. I have so many struggles, but I continue to push through it all.
I’m a strong woman.
